ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team continued its winning ways on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 3, defeating the Christian Heritage Lions 13-5 in five innings at the Upper Campus Softball Field.

The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a Grace Westmoreland double that plated Savanna Messner.

The Lions took their only lead in the top of the second, scoring three runs for a 3-1 edge.

But in the bottom of the second inning with the bases loaded, Messner scorched a line drive to left center field over the wall for a grand slam and a 5-3 Mustang lead.

Mount Vernon added five more runs in the third frame for a 10-3 lead.

Kate Christian singled in Westmoreland, Lauren Dove singled home Jane Holliday, and Bella Dishman brought in Dove and Whitney Dishman.

After a scoreless fourth, the Lions added two runs in the top of the fifth for a 10-5 Mustang advantage.

But Mount Vernon kept the bats going, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the run rule into effect at 13-5.

Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.

The righty tossed 3.2 innings while allowing two runs (one earned) and three hits and striking out two batters.

The Mustangs (6-0) return to the diamond after the Labor Day holiday, hosting Galloway on Thursday, Sept. 10.

The Mustangs defeated Galloway 9-0 back on August 18.

Mount Vernon will go for the season sweep of the Scots at 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field next Thursday.
