ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team picked up its third straight victory on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 30, defeating the Mt. Pisgah Patriots 8-3 at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
After allowing a run in the top of the first inning, the Mustangs took the lead for good, plating three runs in the bottom half.
Lauren Dove reached on an infield error to score Bella Dishman. Ruby Burnett and Dove scored later in the inning on another Patriot error as well for a 3-1 lead.
The Mustangs added a run in. the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead when Dishman grounded out to score Frances Hunt.
After a scoreless third frame, Mount Vernon added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Dishman singled to plate Reagan Hickey for a 5-1 advantage.
The Mustangs busted the game wide open in the fifth inning, scoring three runs for an 8-1 lead.
The Patriots added a run in the sixth and seventh innings, but could do no more.
Grace Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for Mount Vernon.
The righty tossed a complete game, allowing three runs and striking out 14 batters while allowing just two walks.
The Mustangs (11-1) return to action Thursday afternoon, Oct. 1, hosting the Mt. Paran Christian School Eagles.
First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
