Mustangs Top Athens Christian Eagles 42-26 En Route to Second Victory

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity football team picked up its second victory in as many tries on Friday afternoon, Oct. 2, handing the Athens Christian Eagles their first loss of the season with a 42-26 victory in non-region play at the Upper Campus Stadium Field.

Mount Vernon scored early with the first touchdown coming with 10:09 to play in the first quarter when Blake Kytle connected with Andrew Douglas for a 38-yard touchdown. William Lavender made the extra point for an early 7-0 Mustang lead.

The Eagles got on the board late in the first quarter when quarterback Caleb Williams found Ethan Christian for a 37-yard score. Johann Fuentes made the PAT to tie the game at 7-7.

Both squads scored twice in the second quarter.

Jonathan Gallinaro received a touchdown pass from Kytle, who rushed in a 12-yard score as well in the second period.

Nalen Curry caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from Williams while Johness Davis broke away for a 70-yard score for a 21-29 Mount Vernon lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Mustang defense allowed just one score by Athens Christian while the Mount Vernon offense scored three more times.

Coulton Musser and Jack Mette each hauled in a touchdown from Kytle, who also rushed for his second touchdown of the day.

The Eagles scored on a Davis 29-yard run for Athens Chritian.

Kytle finished the game 20-for-30 with four touchdowns, one interception and 280 yards.

Douglas totaled five catches for 85 yards to lead the Mustangs in receiving.

Altogether, Mount Vernon spread the wealth on offense with seven different receivers making at least one catch.

The Mustangs finished with six penalties while the Eagles totaled 10 mishaps.

Mount Vernon (2-2) returns to action on Friday, Oct. 9, traveling to George Walton Academy.

Kickoff against the Bulldogs is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Monroe, GA.
