Varsity Girls and Boys Tennis Start 2021 Season with 3-2 Victories Over Mt. Pisgah

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity girls and boys tennis teams each picked up 3-2 victories over Mt. Pisgah on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 9, at the Sandy Springs Tennis Center to open the 2021 season.

Below are the results from both matches.

BOYS:
1 Singles: Kiefer Hurtado W 6-1, 6-1
2 Singles: Cooper Patnode W 7-5, 6-1
3 Singles: Christopher Collins W 6-1, 6-1
1 Doubles: Aaron Asher/Jac Crouch L 0-6, 1-6
2 Doubles: Warren Neel/Henry Matthews L 2-6, 2-6

GIRLS:
1 Singles: Sofia Tur W 6-2, 6-4
2 Singles: Ellie Stalzer L 1-6, 3-6
3 Singles: Sadie Hutchens W 5-7, 6-4, 10-6
1 Doubles: Reagan Wissman/Rory Hansen W 6-1, 6-3
2 Doubles: Nicole Walker/Ashley Burke L 3-6, 0-6

"What a great first match and a first team win," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "Playing all 10 matches simultaneously was a new format for us, and I am so proud of everyone who played, worked through nerves and gave it their all."

"On the boys' side, sophomores Kiefer Hurtado and Christopher Collins each made quick work of their singles opponents, while junior Cooper Patnode prevailed after playing nearly 2 hours to win 2 sets with the pressure of the whole crowd watching the end of the final set!"

"On the girls' side, freshman Sofia Tur earned her first Varsity win at #1 Singles. Sophomore Sadie Hutchens fought hard for her 3rd set tiebreak win at #3 Singles in the most hotly contested match of the day. Sophomore Reagan Wissman and freshman Rory Hansen looked like a seasoned doubles pair as they cruised to their straight sets win at #1 Doubles."

The tennis teams return to the court on Tuesday, Feb. 16, hosting the St. Francis Knights.

First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Sandy Springs Tennis Center.
