STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team picked up a 12-9 victory on Saturday afternoon, March 20, at Stephenson High School.
The Mustangs led the entire way, scoring at least one run in every inning except one.
Mount Vernon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Cole Forrest scored on a throwing error and Will Allison came home on a wild pitch.
In the second inning, the Mustangs added three more runs for a 5-0 advantage.
Allison singled to bring home Landon Brice and Forrest.
Allison later scored on a double play hit into by Dawson Stevens.
Stephenson added a run in the bottom of the second to make it a 5-1 game but the Mustangs answered with a run in the top of the third inning on a David Adkins sacrifice fly to bring in Edward Hires.
Mount Vernon kept adding on, plating two runs in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 8-1
Austin Taylor scored on a Stephenson fielding error followed by Dylan Holbrook scoring on a passed ball.
In the sixth, the Mustangs added three runs to go ahead 11-1.
Stephenson answered with a run in the bottom half.
Mount Vernon added its final run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning when Forrest doubled to plate Jack Mette.
Stephenson came roaring back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring seven runs.
But it wasn't enough and the Mustangs held on for the victory.
Dylan Holbrook picked up the win on the mound for Mount Vernon.
The sophomore pitched five innings, allowed one run on two hits and struck out six batters.
Mount Vernon is back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 23, traveling to Hebron Christian for a key Region 5-1A match up.
First pitch against the Lions is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Dacula, Ga.
