Baseball Earns State Playoff Bid with 7-4 Region Victory Over Providence Christian

LILBURN, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team earned a trip to the GHSA Class-A Private State Tournament on Thursday night, April 22, defeating the Providence Christian Storm 7-4 on the road.

With the win the Mustangs earned the no. 4 and final seed from Region 5-1A.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the first and three in the second inning for a 4-3 lead.

The Mustangs scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Sims in the first inning, a triple by Blake Kytle in the second inning, and a groundout by Cole Forrest in the second inning.

Mount Vernon earned the victory despite allowing Providence Christian Academy to score three runs in the first inning.

The Mustangs pulled away for good with three runs in the second inning.

In the second, Kytle tripled on a 2-1 count, scoring two runs and Forrest grounded out, scoring one run.

Dylan Holbrook pitched the Mustangs to victory, surrendering four runs on one hit over two innings, while striking out three batters.

Sims threw five innings in relief out of the bullpen and recorded the last 15 outs to pick up the save.

The Mustangs racked up eight hits on the day with Kytle and Sims each collecting two hits.

Mount Vernon closes out the regular season on Friday, April 23, taking on Holy Innocents on the road at 5 p.m.

The Mustangs will then prepare for the first round of the GHSA Class-A Private State Tournament on April 29-30, taking on Athens Christian, the no. 1 seed from Region 8-1A.

Start times against the Eagles will be announced in the coming days for the best-of-three game series in Athens, Ga.
