ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team kicked off the 2021 season with a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the North Atlanta High School Warriors on Friday afternoon, August 6 at the Upper Campus Softball Field.

The Mustangs trailed the majority of the game before scoring on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the victory.

After two scoreless innings, the Warriors scored two runs in the top of the third frame when Taylor Frame singled home Reece Linton and CeCe Smith for the early advantage.,

The Mustangs got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Reagan Hickey doubled off the center field fence to score Bella Dishman to cut the Warrior lead in half.

Two innings later it was Dishman who tied the game with a double to plate Savanna Messner.

After retiring the Warriors in order in the seventh, the Mustangs came to the plate with a chance to win the game outright in the bottom half.

Reese Hickey walked and later scored on a Kendall Slayden sacrifice bunt.

The Warriors forced out Slayden at first but a wild throw to third to get Hickey sailed wide of the bag allowing Hickey to score and for the Mustangs to take the victory.

Grace Westmoreland had a strong outing in the circle for the Mustangs in her season debut.

The sophomore tossed a complete game, allowing two runs on two hits while racking a whopping 15 strikeouts.
