ATLANTA - After dropping an 8-0 contest at Mt. Paran on August 12, the Mount Vernon varsity softball team responded in a big way by racking up victories over Riverood, Holy Innocents and North Springs to claim the first inaugural Sandy Springs Softball Championship.

After a 5-0 victory over Riverwood on Friday, August 13, the Mustangs added two more wins on Saturday, August 14.

Mount Vernon defeated region rival Holy Innocents 8-0 in five innings followed by a 5-0 victory over North Springs.

Grace Westmoreland tossed a no hitter against Holy Innocents en route to the Mustang victory.

The sophomore also struck out 10 batters in the no hit bid.

Westmoreland also helped her own cause at the plate, finishing with four RBI's and a 3-3 performance at the dish.

Reagan Hickey and Kate Christian each had one RBI for the Mustangs as well.

Against North Springs, freshman pitcher Reese Hickey dazzled Spartan batters all day, throwing six no hit innings with a chance to record a no hitter in the seventh frame.

Hickey allowed two hits in the final frame but it didn't take away from her performance, maintaining the shutout while totaling 12 strikeouts on the day in her Mustang debut.

Bella Dishman, Westmoreland, Reagan Hickey, and Jane Holliday each had one RBI for the Mustangs.

Mount Vernon (4-1) is back on the field on Thursday, August 19, hosting the Walker School.

First pitch against the Wolverines is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
