Mustangs Push Winning Streak to Four with 13-5 Victory at Pickens County

JASPER, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team picked up its fourth straight victory on Tuesday afternoon, August 24, defeating the Pickens County Dragons 13-5 in five innings.

Mount Vernon opened the scoring early, plating two runs in the top of the first inning.

Grace Westmoreland singled to score Savanna Messner followed by a Reese Hickey single to plate Westmoreland.

After the Dragons tied the game in the bottom of the first, the Mustangs recaptured the lead in the top of the third inning when Hickey tripled to score Jane Holliday for a 3-2 lead.

The Dragons briefly took the lead in the bottom of the third but the Mustangs punched back with a seven run fourth inning to take a commanding 10-3 advantage.

Messner tripled home Ruby Burnett and Kendall Slayden, Dishman tripled to bring home Messner, and Westmoreland singled on an infield bunt to score Dishman.

Later in the inning, Hickey tripled to score Maggie Moore and Holliday.

The final run of the inning came on a Whitney Dishman ground out to score Burnett.

The Mustangs added three runs in the fifth inning and allowed just one to bring the run rule into effect.

Westmoreland and Hickey led the charge at the dish for the Mustangs, each collecting four RBI's.

Messner finished with two RBI's while Bella Dishman, Whitney Dishman and Holliday each finished with one RBI.

Westmoreland (4-1) piked up the win in the circle, throwing a complete game and allowing five runs (four earned) with three strikeouts.

The Mustangs (5-1) will look to extend their winning streak on Thursday, August 26, traveling to the Darlington School for a non-region match up.

First pitch against the Tigers is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
