ROME, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team kept to its winning ways on Thursday afternoon, August 26, defeating the Darlington School Tigers 10-1 in six innings.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Grace Westmoreland doubled to score Bella Dishman. Westmoreland would later score on an infield error by the Tigers.
After a scoreless second and third, the Mustangs added one run in the top of the fourth when Bella Dishman singled to bring home Maggie Moore for a 3-0 lead.
After allowing run in the bottom of the sixth, the Mustangs broke the game wide open, scoring seven runs in the top of the sixth inning.
Westmoreland singled to score Savanna Messner, Whitney Dishman reached on an error to plate Bella Dishman.
Lauren Dove followed with a 2-RBI double as did Kennedy Reynolds for a 9-1 Mustang lead.
The final run of the contest came when Frances Hunt singled to score Reynolds for a 10-1 lead.
The Mustangs retired the Tigers in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the run rule into effect.
Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs, tossing three innings and striking out eight batters.
Mount Vernon (6-1) returns to the diamond on Tuesday, August 31, taking on North Cobb Christian.
First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m. in Kennesaw, Ga.
