Westmoreland Tosses No-Hitter as Mustangs Trample Galloway, 8-0

ATLANTA - For the second time this season, Grace Westmoreland has thrown a no-hitter.

The sophomore hurler blanked the Galloway Scots, throwing five innings and racking up nine strikeouts en route to an 8-0 victory for the Mustangs on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 2 at the Upper Campus Softball Field.

The victory is Mount Vernon's sixth consecutive win.

The Mustangs started the scoring early in the bottom of the first inning when Bella Dishman doubled to left field to score Savanna Messner.

The Mustangs added four more runs in the second inning for a 5-0 advantage over their cross-town rival.

Kendall Slayden reached on a fielding error to score Lauren Dove, Messner hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Slayden, Whitney Dishman scored after tagging up on a line drive out by Bella Dishman to left field and Westmoreland doubled to plate Frances Hunt.

After a scoreless third, the Mustangs added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Westmoreland hit an inside-the-park home run that brought in Bella Dishman for a 7-0 lead.

Whitney Dishman grounded into a fielder's choice later in the inning to plate Reese Hickey to put the Mustangs up 8-0.

Westmoreland retired the side in the top of the fifth to bring the run-rule into effect and give the Mustangs the win.

Westmoreland also led the charge at the plate for the Mustangs, going 2-3 with three RBI's.

Bella Dishman finished with two RBI's as well.

The Mustangs are back on the diamond after the Labor Day holiday.

Mount Vernon hosts North Cobb Christian on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Upper Campus Softball Field.
