Softball Picks Up Weekend Wins Over Landmark Christian and Trion

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team picked up two victories on Saturday, Sept. 24, defeating the Landmark Christian War Eagles 9-1 followed by a 4-1 victory over Trion High School at the Upper Campus Softball Field.

In the win over Landmark, Savanna Messner hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the fifth to lead the Mustangs to victory.

Bella Dishman and Messner each had two RBI's in the victory over Landmark.

The Mustangs led 2-0 after the first two innings and added six runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead with ease.

Four Mustangs had multiple hits in the Landmark contest: Dishman, Messner, Reagan Hickey and Frances Hunt.

Reese Hickey picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs against Landmark.

The freshman allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters.

In the final game of the day, Mount Vernon defeated Trion 4-1 with a strong performance from Grave Westmoreland in the circle.

The sophomore pitched a complete game while allowing one run and striking out a whopping 13 batters.

The Mustangs led 3-0 at the end of the first inning and added another run in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 advantage.

Trion's lone run of the game came in the top of the fourth inning.

Kendall Slayden led the offensive charge for the Mustangs, finishing with two RBI's.

Dishman and Messner each had one RBI as well.

The Mustangs (15-2) are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 28, hosting the Darlington School on Senior Night.

First pitch against the Tigers is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
