Mustangs Split Sweet 16 Doubleheader with Prince Avenue, Winner-Take-All Game Three Set for Thursday, October 21

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity softball team split its playoff doubleheader against Prince Avenue Wolverines on Wednesday afternoon, winning Game One 5-2 before dropping Game Two 7-4.

The split sets up a winner-take-all Game Three on Thursday, Oct. 21, at 3:30 p.m. at Mustang Park.

In Game One, the Mustangs fired on all cylinders.

After two scoreless innings, the Mustangs broke through in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead.

Bella Dishman tripled to score Reese Hickey and Frances Hunt followed by a Grace Westmoreland double that plated Dishman.

The Mustangs added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth when Reagan Hickey drilled a line drive home run to center field to score Kendall Slayden for a 5-0 advantage.

The Wolverines added a run in the top of the seventh inning, but it would prove to be too late.

Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for Game One.

The righty allowed just one run on two hits over seven innings. She also struck out 12 batters en route to the victory.

Game Two was a much different story.

Playing as the home team, Prince Avenue came out aggressive with the bats and took an early 3-0 lead after the first inning.

Ella Osbourne doubled to plate Taylor Thomas and Sam Cartey for a 2-0 lead.

The Wolverines added one more in the first when Kirsten Perry singled to bring home Osbourne.

After a scoreless third, the Wolverines added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Madi Gillespe and Osbourne scored on a Mustang errors followed by a Rachel Biggs single to bring home Perry for a 6-0 advantage.

The Mustangs got on the board in the top of the sixth inning, scoring twice.

Savanna Messner hit a solo home run to cut the score to 6-1.

Later in the inning, Jane Holliday hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in Ruby Burnett to make it a 6-2 game.

Prince Avenue added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Audrey Vandagriff scored on a passed ball to give the Wolverines a 7-2 advantage.

In their last at bat, the Mustangs added two runs, but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines forced a winner-take-all Game Three.
