ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity girls and boys basketball teams had a successful weekend, defeating the 6A Riverwood Raiders on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 10, at the Upper Campus Gym.
In the girls contest, the Mustangs claimed a 70-56 victory over the Raiders.
Mount Vernon lead 22-13 at the end of the first quarter and outscored Riverwood 24-11 in the second period for a 46-24 lead at halftime.
In the second half, the Mustangs continued their hot shooting to earn the victory, their fourth consecutive win at home in as many tries.
Savannah Robinson-Holmes paced the Mustangs in scoring with 29 points, including six made 3-pointers.
Mia James added 17 points (three 3-pointers) and J'Bionna Robinson chipped in with 16 points, eight of which came from the charity stripe.
Mount Vernon (8-4) has now won four straight, all of which have come on their home floor.
In the guys contest, the Mustangs came away with an impressive 60-47 victory over the Raiders.
Kenneth Southall led the Mustangs in scoring with 18 points while pulling down six rebounds.
Dennis Scott Jr. posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The sophomore also recorded a game-high five blocks.
AJ Patterson finished with double figures scoring with 11 points.
The Mustangs (7-5) have now won two straight dating back to their previous game on Dec. 30, a 61-47 win against Douglas County.
Mount Vernon varsity girls and boys basketball are back in action Friday, Jan. 14, hosting the 1A St. Francis Knights.
Tip-off for the varsity girls is scheduled for 6 p.m. followed by the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gym.
