JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity wrestling team is headed to the State Preliminaries!
The Mustangs accomplished that feat by taking second place at the Area Duals on Friday, Jan. 7 at Mt. Pisgah.
Mount Vernon defeated Fellowship Christian in the first round 42-36 with Walker Warshaw securing the win with a pin in the last match of the dual to break the tie.
Even though the Mustangs fell to the Patriots (56-10), the runner-up finish was still good for a trip to the State Preliminaries.
Highlights from the Area Duals are as follows:
-Walker Warshaw was 2-0 with two pins
-Tyler Long was 2-0 with a pin and a major decision
-Ryley Fuller, Liam O'Toole, Mickeal Pozzobon, and Sam Worth had pins against Fellowship
"I am really proud of how the guys rose to the occasion and didn't back down in our semi-final match up," Head Coach Bobby Hayes said. "Even when we got behind by a few points, they carried themselves with poise and executed what we have worked on all season."
Added Hayes: "Our guys on the bench really provided some energy as they cheered the guys on the mat on to a victory."
The Mustangs are back in action this week at North Cobb Christian on Wednesday, Jan. 12 followed by the State Preliminaries against Washington-Wilkes on Friday, Jan. 14 at Social Circle High School starting at 2 p.m.
