Mustangs Knock Off North Cobb Christian 4-1, Advance to Sweet-16

KENNESAW, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity girls soccer team is headed to the GHSA Class-A Private Sweet-16 for the first time in program history.

The Mustangs accomplished that feat by defeating the North Cobb Christian Eagles on the road 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon, April 12.

Mount Vernon scored one goal in the first period when Ruby Turner found Brooke Benn with 24:07 to play in the first period.

Both teams would battle to a 1-1 deadlock after the first half of play.

But in the second period, the Mustangs scored three unanswered goals to seal the win and advance.

Mount Vernon took the lead for good with 33:23 to play in the match when Taylor Keller found Karoline Lundstrom for her first of two second-half goals.

The Mustangs made it 3-1 with 2:05 to play in the match on a Keller goal assisted by Benn followed by another Lundstrom score as time expired.

The Mustangs (9-5) will take on Stratford Academy on Monday, April 18 in the Sweet-16.

The Eaglettes, the no. 1 seed from Region 1, defeated Savannah Christian 10-0 on Tuesday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Macon, Ga.
