ATLANTA - If Mount Vernon's goal is to get back to the Elite-8 in Columbus by season's end, consider Wednesday's season opener a great start to accomplishing that feat.

The Mustangs picked up their first win of the 2022 campaign on Wednesday afternoon, August 10, defeating the St. Pius Golden Lions 7-4 at Spellman Field.

Trailing 1-0 after three innings, the Mustangs tied the game in the top of the fourth inning when Reagan Hickey single to left field to score Reese Hickey.

In the top of the fifth, Mount Vernon took the lead for good when Kennedy Reynolds and Priscilla Andrin scored on a St. Pius error to give the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.

Later in the inning, Maggie Moore scored when Lauren Dove reached on another Lions mishap for a 4-1 advantage.

Andrin doubled in the top of the sixth inning to plate Reynolds followed by a Reagan Hickey 2-run home run over the left field fence for a 7-1 Mustang edge.

St. Pius' late comeback bid came up short in the bottom of the seventh with the game ending on a line-drive double play caught and executed by Dove.

Reese Hickey (1-0) picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs.

The righty tossed a complete game, allowing four runs (three earned) and six hits while striking out eight batters.

The Mustangs out-hit the Lions 9-6 on the day and committed just one error in the field to the Lions' five.

The Mustangs (1-0) are back in action on Friday, August 12, taking on North Springs in the first game of the "Battle of Sandy Springs" Tournament.

First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. against the Spartans at Riverwood High School.
