ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Volleyball team earned a split in their home opener, taking down the Chamblee Bulldogs 2-0 before falling to the Locust Grove Wildcats 0-2 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium on Thursday night, August 18.

In the first match of the night, Mount Vernon picked up the victory over Chamblee in two sets, 25-22 and 25-21.

"I think we did really well just playing together as a team against Chamblee," senior Lauren Bell said. "Against Locust Grove, I think we had a lack of focus and when that happens we start to play more individually than together."

"When we pick up our energy, everyone is more into it and that's why I love this sport," added Bell. "I can't wait to see us do that more."

Claire Jacobsen finished with four kills to pace the Mustangs while teammates Bell and Sophia Van Name notched three apiece.

Jacobsen led the squad in digs with nine and Kate Dawson finished with six.

Anna-Charlotte Toole was active all match, assisting her team 14 times while putting up four aces.

In the nightcap, the Mustangs fell to Locust Grove in two sets, 22-25 and 20-25.

Toole led the team in assists again with eight while Maggie Sims had three kills.

"The girls came out focused against Chamblee," Head Coach Russell Aguirre said. "Our girls really wanted that (match), especially with that being our home opener. We saw a lot of glimpses of what this team is going to look like at the tail end of the season."

The Mustangs (1-3) will continue their 2022 journey together on Saturday, August 20, competing in the Holy Innocents Private School Playdate.

Matches are set to start at 8 a.m.
