Varsity Softball Drops Region Opener at Mt. Pisgah, 9-2

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team dropped its Reg. 6-A Division-1 opener at Mt. Pisgah on Tuesday afternoon, August 23, falling to the Patriots 9-2 at the Patriot Athletic Campus.

The Patriots led 1-0 after the first inning before the Mustangs tied the contest 1-1 in the top of the second when Frances Hunt singled and Ruby Burnett came around to score on a Patriot miscue in the field.

The Patriots took the lead back for good in the bottom of the third inning when Isabel Kirby homered to center field to score Erin Parker for a 3-1 score.

Mount Vernon got a run back in the top of the fifth when Olivia McDougall hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Whitney Dishman for a 3-2 game.

The Patriots put the game away in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs, highlighted by a Jaime Ketter 3-run home run to center.

Kirby earned the win for the Patriots allowing six hits and two runs while striking out four batters.

Grace Westmoreland was tagged with the loss for the Mustangs, throwing 4.2 innings and striking out eight batters.

The Mustang defense committed six errors on the field, the most of the 2022 season thus far.

Mount Vernon returns to the diamond on Thursday, August 25, hosting another region opponent in St. Francis.

First pitch against the Knights is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Mustang Park.
