ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team pushed its winning streak to five, defeating the Mt. Pisgah Patriots 5-4 on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Mustang Park.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never relinquished the lead.

Grace Westmoreland's infield single scored Kennedy Reynolds and Reese Hickey grounded out to plate Priscilla Andrin later in the inning.

Mount Vernon made it 3-0 in the bottom of the third on a Reese Hickey double to center field to bring in Andrin.

The Patriots pulled within one run when Erin Parker hit a two-run home run to make it a 3-2 contest in the fourth.

The Mustangs got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Reynolds doubled to left field to plate Lauren Dove for a 4-2 game.

In the fifth inning, the Mustangs added another run on Reese Hickey double to bring around Ruby Burnett for a 5-2 lead.

The Patriots pulled to within one run again in the sixth inning and put the game-tying and go-ahead runners on base in the top of the seventh with two outs.

But Westmoreland struck out Kiera Yi to end the game, giving the Mustangs the win.

Westmoreland finished with 12 strikeouts while allowing five hits and five walks in the winning bid.

The Mustangs are now tied with Mt. Pisgah in Region 6-A with a 4-1 record with both teams winning on their home turf.

Should both squads win out in region play for the remainder of the season, a one-game playoff, with a coin flip deciding the home team, would be played to determine first and second place.

Mount Vernon (10-2) is back on the diamond on Saturday, Sept. 10, traveling to Westminster for a round-robin tournament.

The Mustangs face Thomas County Central at 2 p.m. followed by the host Wildcats at 4 p.m.
