Mustangs Sweep Home Region Matches Against Whitefield, Atlanta International

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Volleyball team picked up key region wins on Tuesday night, Sept. 13, defeating the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 2-1 followed by a 2-0 shutout over the Atlanta International School Eagles at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.

In the first match of the night against the Wolfpack, the Mustangs took the first set in convincing fashion 25-16 but dropped the second set 13-25.

The final set was a thriller as the Mustangs found themselves down 8-11 before rallying to tie the set a 11-11.

The Mustangs would close the set on a 4-1 spurt to take the win.

Abby Etheridge finished with four aces while teammate Cate Jacobsen totaled two.

The Mustangs racked up 20 kills in the match with Lauren Bell leading the way with seven and Taylor Docka netting six.

Sophia Van Name had all 19 assists for the Mustangs and led the squad with nine digs.

In the nightcap, the Mustangs completed the sweep in two sets over the Eagles 25-9 and 25-14.

Mount Vernon finished with 11 aces paced by Van Name's four.

The Mustangs controlled the flow of the match as well, racking up 23 kills led by Lauren Bell's eight.

Van Name finished with all 23 assists while Kate Dawson secured 10 of Mount Vernon's 27 digs.

The Mustangs (11-15, 6-1 Reg. 6) are back on the court on Tuesday, Sept. 20, traveling to Mt. Bethel for a key Region 6 match.

First serve against the Eagles is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Marietta, Ga.
