MUSTANGS STRIDE TO TENTH STRAIGHT WIN WITH 8-0 REGION VICTORY OVER WHITEFIELD

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team kept to its winning ways Thursday afternoon, Sept 15, defeating the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 8-0 in five innings at Mustang Park in Region 6-1A action.

The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning after a RBI ground out by Grace Westmoreland followed by a Reese Hickey sacrifice fly to bring in Priscilla Andrin.

After a scoreless second, the Mustangs added three runs in the third to take a commanding 5-0 lead.

Westmoreland tripled to right field to bring in Andrin and came in to score on a Wolfpack throwing error.

Ruby Burnett scored later in the inning on a wild pitch to add to the Mustang lead.

Mount Vernon scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the first coming on an Andrin single to right field that plated Kennedy Reynolds.

Hickey followed two batters later with a single to right field to score Mia Winokur and Maggie Moore for an 8-0 Mustang edge.

With the run rule in effect in the fifth, Westmoreland retired the side in order to secure the win.

Westmoreland tossed a no-hitter in the five inning affair, racking up 12 strikeouts with just four walks.

During their current winning streak, the Mustangs have outscored opponents 110-12 and have shut out opponents six times.

Mount Vernon has also recorded four consecutive shutouts.

The Mustangs (15-2, 7-1 Reg. 6) are back on the field on Tuesday, Sept. 20, traveling to the Galloway School for another region contest.

Mount Vernon took the first game of the year against Galloway 18-0 back on Sept. 1.

First pitch for Tuesday's contest is slated for 5 p.m.
