ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team closed out the home portion of the 2022 regular season on Thursday, Oct. 6 defeating the Lovett School Lions 5-3 at Mustang Park.
The Mustangs led early, scoring the first run of the contest in the bottom of the second inning when Reese Hickey grounded out to first to plate Priscilla Andrin for a 1-0 lead.
The Lions took the lead in the top of the third inning, scoring twice for a 2-1 advantage.
Ana Gore grounded into a fielder's choice to score Libby Stewart followed by a Maggie Tucker double to left field that brought home Gore.
The Mustangs took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning when Lauren Dove blasted a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall to score Ruby Burnett and Hickey, giving the Mustangs a 4-2 edge.
Mount Vernon added another run in bottom of the fourth inning when Hickey singled to left field to plate Maggie Moore for a 5-2 lead.
The Lions recorded their final run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning on a passed ball that allowed Stewart to score to put the game at a 5-3 mark.
Grace Westmoreland recorded her 400th carer strikeout in the winning bid.
The righty allowed three runs, five hits and struck out 11 batters while surrendering just one walk.
The Mustangs (20-4) return to the field on Wednesday, Sept. 12 traveling to Cherokee Bluff for a non-region contest.
