Balanced Attack Sends Mustangs Past Mount Zion Eagles 27-14

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Football team snapped a two-game slide on Friday afternoon, Oct. 7, defeating the Mount Zion Eagles 27-14 at Ron Hill Field.

Mount Vernon struck first in the opening quarter with 6:45 to play when Sam Nazarian connected with Ben Spitz for an 8-yard touchdown.

Mount Zion's Preston Denney broke away on the ensuing possession, scoring on a 33-yard rush to tie the game at 7-7.

In the second quarter, the Mustangs used their special teams to take the lead.

Nathan Webb connected on two field goals, one from 27-yards and the other from 29-yards to give the Mustangs a 13-7 lead at halftime.

Liam O'Toole scored to push the Mustang lead to 13 with a 9-yard rush midway through the third quarter.

O'Toole struck again in the fourth on a 2-yard score to give the Mustangs a 27-7 lead.

Eagle quarterback Alex Zelaya scored late in the period on a 1-yard rush.

Webb was perfect on his PAT's on the day.

The Mustangs will have a week off before returning to the field to begin Region 6-1A play.

Kickoff for the Mustangs' region opener is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah in Johns Creek, Ga.
