Region Champions! Mustangs Mash Mount Pisgah 11-2 to Claim 2022 Region Crown

JOHNS CREEK, Ga - For the first time in program history, the Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team are the outright region champions.

The Mustangs secured the GHSA Region 6-A DI title on Thursday, Oct. 13 defeating the Mount Pisgah Patriots 11-2 in five innings at the Patriot Athletic Campus.

Mount Vernon will now host the State Tournament Super Regional next Tuesday-Wednesday, Oct. 18-19.

The Mustangs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Reese Hickey reached on an infield error to score Ruby Burnett.

The Patriots evened the game at 1-1 on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the second.

After a scoreless third inning, the Mustangs broke out the lumber in a big way scoring eight runs to take a commanding 9-1 lead.

Kennedy Reynolds singled to left field to score Whitney Dishman and Mollie Martin, Priscilla Andrin reached on an infield error to bring in Frances Hunt and Grace Westmoreland doubled to center field to plate Reynolds and Andrin.

After a Reese Hickey walk, Reagan Hickey, in her first game back from injury, launched a home run to right field to score two more runs.

The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Riley Pickren singled to score Kyle Yi for a 9-2 contest.

The Mustangs answered back with two runs in the top of the fifth inning for an 11-2 game, bringing the run-rule into effect.

Westmoreland grounded out to score Reynolds followed by a Reese Hickey single to left field to bring in Burnett.

Westmoreland retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory.

The righty allowed two runs on two hits while striking out seven batters and surrendering four walks.

Mount Vernon outhit the Patriots 13-2 on the day and played flawless defense with no errors.

The Mustangs will take on Jasper County, the no. 4 seed from Region 5, in Game 1 of the Super Regionals on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at Mustang Park at a time to be determined.
