Mustangs Sweep First Day of Super Regionals, One Win Away From Columbus

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team is one win away from the GHSA Class-A DI Elite Eight.

The Mustangs swept their opponents in Day 1 of the Super Regional round, taking down Dade County 5-3 after run-ruling Jasper County 16-0 in three innings.

Tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth with two runners on and two outs, Lauren Dove singled to center field to score Ruby Burnett for a 4-3 lead.

One batter later, Whitney Dishman singled up the middle to plate Reese Hickey for a 5-3 advantage.

Grace Westmoreland worked around two walks in the top of the seventh to send the Mustangs to the Super Regional Championship game on Wednesday afternoon.

Mount Vernon jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning against Dade County when Dishman singled to center field to plate Reagan Hickey for an early edge.

Reagan Hickey made it 3-0 Mustangs in bottom of the fifth inning, smashing a 3-2 pitch well over the left field wall to bring in Reese Hickey.

Dade County scored three in the top of the sixth inning to even the contest at 3-3.

Kayleigh Warnick doubled home Alyssa Wilson and Kaitlyn Stinnett followed by a Reagan Page double to plate Maddie Cuzzort.

Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle, tossing seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits and striking out seven batters with four walks.

Warnock was charged for the loss for Dade County.

In the first game of the day, the Mustangs defeated Jasper County 16-0 in three innings.

Reagan Hickey hit her first home run of the day and finished with four RBI's while teammate and sister Reese Hickey notched two hits and RBI's.

Frances Hunt totaled two RBI's as well.

Rabun County and Dade County will face off in an elimination game on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., with the winner advancing to play the Mustangs at 1 p.m. at Mustang Park.
