Mustangs Upset Oglethorpe County Patriots 3-0 to Advance to Sweet 16

LEXINGTON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Volleyball team is moving on to the Sweet 16.

The Mustangs secured that spot in the GHSA Class-A State Tournament on Tuesday night, Oct. 18 by defeating the Oglethorpe County Patriots 3-0 on the road.

The Patriots were the no. 1 seed from Area 5 while the Mustangs came in as the no. 4 seed from Area 6.

The Mustangs took the first set 26-24, won the second set 25-17 and secured the sweep and victory with a 25-14 win in the third set.

Mount Vernon totaled 16 aces in the best-of-five match with Cate Jacobsen leading the way with eight.

Taylor Docka finished with 11 kills while Lauren Bell notched nine.

Teammates Maggie Sims and Sophia Van Name each had six kills as well in the winning bid.

Van Name had 33 of Mount Vernon's 34 kills on the night while Kate Dawson paced the team with nine digs.

The Mustangs will travel to play Prince Avenue, the no. 2 seed from Area 8, on Saturday, Oct. 22.

A time will be announced in the coming days for the Sweet 16 best-of-five match in Bogart, Ga.
