BOGART, Ga. - For the first time in program history, the Mount Vernon Varsity Volleyball team is moving on to the GHSA Class-A Elite 8.

The Mustangs accomplished that feat by defeating Prince Avenue, the no. 2 seed from Area 8, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at Wolverine Gymnasium.

Mount Vernon took the first set 25-15 and followed that with a 25-21 victory in the second set to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

The Wolverines clawed back into the match by winning the third set 25-18 before taking the fourth set 25-23 to force a winner-take-all fifth set.

The fifth set was back and forth early, but the Mustangs pulled ahead at 8-5 forcing Prince Avenue to call a timeout.

Mount Vernon finished the match on a 7-4 run to close the match for good and earn the 15-9 win.

The Mustangs finished with 12 aces on the day with Sophia Van Name racking up five.

Teammates Abby Etheridge and Cate Jacobsen had two aces as well.

Mount Vernon controlled the tempo throughout the match, finishing with 42 kills with Van Name and Lauren Bell pacing the squad with 15 and 11 respectively.

Claire Jacobsen had seven kills and Taylor Docka and Maggie Sims totaled four each.

Van Name finished with 31 of Mount Vernon's 42 assists and Kate Dawson had 22 of the teams' 55 digs.

Mount Vernon has now won two straight matches against a higher seeded opponent in the State Tournament.

The Mustangs will look to continue that trend in the Elite 8, traveling to Woodville-Tompkins, the no. 1 seed from Area 3, on Tuesday, Oct. 25.

First serve against the Wolverines is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Savannah, Ga.
