SAVANNAH, Ga. - For the first time in school history, a Mount Vernon Varsity team is going to the GHSA Final Four.
The Varsity Volleyball team accomplished that feat by advancing in the Class-A State Tournament with a 3-0 road victory over the Woodville-Tompkins Wolverines on Tuesday night, Oct. 25.
The Mustangs took the first two sets 25-10 and captured the shutout with a 25-8 third set win.
Mount Vernon averaged over six aces per set, finishing with 20 on the night.
Sophia Van Name and Kate Dawson put up five aces each while teammate Brooke Nazarian finished with four.
Mount Vernon tallied 36 kills in the match with Van Name leading the way with 11.
The Mustangs spread the wealth on the other kills with five other players recording at least one: Claire Jacobsen (8), Lauren Bell (7), Taylor Docka (6), Maggie Sims (3) and Charlotte Goerdel (1).
Mount Vernon had 36 assists with Van Name finishing with a whopping 26.
Dawson and Bell paced the team with six and four digs, combining for 10 of the squad's 17.
The Mustangs are back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 29 traveling to region foe Mt. Bethel for a chance to advance to the school's first State Championship match appearance.
Mt. Bethel took the only match of the season against the Mustangs, a 2-0 win on Sept. 20 at home.
Time of the first serve against the Eagles in Marietta, Ga. will be announced in the coming days.
