ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Competition Cheer team is set for its first trip to the GHSA State Championships!
The Mustangs punched their ticket to State for the first time in program history on Saturday, Nov. 5 by finishing in the Top-16 at Regionals at Ola High School.
Mount Vernon scored 64 points, good for the highest mark of the season as well as in program history.
Even with a minor deduction, the team scored high enough to advance to State next weekend, ranking no. 15 leaving the regional tournament.
The Mustangs will have 15 girls representing the team on the mat going into Saturday's competition.
Team members are a combination of JV and Varsity football cheerleaders along with two alternates.
The squad consists of two seniors, four juniors, six sophomores, and five freshmen.
"The team has been working hard this week on perfecting their routine for state, but also enjoying the fact that they just made history," Head Coach Kimberly Exford said.
"Coming into this season, we've had the goal of scoring a 60 or higher on our routine. Now that we did, and accomplished a huge victory in going to state, we are thrilled! We can't wait to represent Mount Vernon this weekend in Macon," Exford added.
Mount Vernon will perform during the A and 5A sessions on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. at the Macon Centreplex.
The Mustangs will be squaring off against the other Top-15 teams in the state and will look to top their season-high score of 64 points.
