ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with a bang on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 12, defeating the North Springs High School Spartans 89-45 on the road.
The Mustangs led 18-14 at the end of the first quarter and secured a 24-7 run in the second period to go ahead 42-21 at halftime.
Mount Vernon outscored North Springs 19-17 in the third quarter before going on a 28-7 spurt in the final period to end the game.
The Mustangs shared the wealth on offense, totaling 20 assists on 29 field goals.
Xavier Shegog paced the Mustangs with a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds.
Teammate Dennis Scott also secured a double-double with 15 points and 14 boards.
AJ Patterson and Kenneth Southall secured double digits scoring as well, each accounting for 12 apiece.
Mount Vernon buried seven 3-pointers in the contest and was 24-for-27 from the charity stripe on the day.
Kendall Heard paced North Springs in scoring with 10 points.
The Mustangs (1-0) are back on the court on Tuesday, Nov. 15 hosting BEST Academy for the 2022-23 home opener.
Tip-off against the Eagles is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gym.
