Mustangs Snap Losing Streak with 86-82 Double Overtime Victory at Douglass High School

ATLANTA - After dropping two straight games over the weekend, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team responded in a major way defeating the Douglass High School Astros 86-82 in double overtime on Tuesday night, Dec. 13.

Mount Vernon led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter but the Astros secured a 23-20 run in the second quarter to tie the game at 35-35 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Mustangs went on a 19-12 spurt in the third period but the Astros responded in the final frame of regulation with a 22-15 run to send the game to overtime.

The Mustangs and Astros battled to a 10-10 draw in the first overtime period to force double overtime.

Mount Vernon pulled away late, winning the second overtime 7-3 to secure the victory.

Four players finished in double-figures scoring for the Mustangs: Xavier Shegog (25), Pace Bottoms (18), ShaYah Goba (17), and Keith Williams (12).

Williams led the team in rebounds with 15, Shegog in blocks with 10 and Patterson in assists with 12.

All 18 of Bottoms' points came from downtown as well.

Mount Vernon hit seven 3-pointers in the contest and finished 12-of-28 from the free thrown line.

Josh Mickell led the Astros with 22 points including three made 3-pointers.

Mount Vernon is now 4-1 through the first five road games of the season.

The Mustangs (9-4) are back on the court on Friday, Dec. 16 traveling to Flint Hill Prep to partake in the Dennis Scott Shooter's Paradise Tournament.

Tip-off against the Huskies is slated for 6 p.m. in Oakton, Va.
