MARIETTA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team closed the book on the 2022-23 regular season in a major way, defeating the no. 1 ranked Mt. Bethel Eagles 61-46 on Friday night, Feb. 3.
The win gives the Mustangs the title of Regular Season Region 6-1A DI Champions, the first time the Mustangs have won their region since moving to the GHSA.
Mount Vernon jumped out to a 13-11 lead after the first quarter and secured 16-11 spurt in the second frame to lead 29-22 at halftime.
The Mustangs won the third quarter 14-12 and put the game away for good in the final period by outscoring the Eagles 19-12.
Xavier Shegog had a monster game with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Kenneth Southall and Dennis Scott III were also in double figures, posting 12 and 10 points respectively.
Keith Williams was active under the basket as well, corralling 12 rebounds to go with his eight points scored.
Mo Diao led Mt. Bethel in scoring with 13 points.
Mount Vernon (17-8) will have a week off before the Region 6-1A Tournament starts on Tuesday, Feb. 14 against a team to be determined.
