ATLANTA -The Mount Vernon Varsity Girls Soccer team dominated in its region opener on Friday, Feb. 10, defeating the Atlanta International School Eagles 5-1 at Ron Hill Field.
The Mustangs punched in a goal four minutes into the match when Eden Wassersug fielded a cross at the top of the box and booted it in for an early 1-0 advantage.
Mount Vernon struck again just before halftime when Taylor Keller corralled a deflection off the Eagle keeper and scored for a 2-0 edge.
The Mustangs made it 3-0 with 33:34 to play in the match on a Karoline Lundstrom penalty kick.
After allowing a score to the Eagles, the Mustangs put the match away for good midway through the second half.
Lundstrom assisted the final two goals of the contest, the first on a free kick to Keller with 17:39 to play and the second to Ruby Turner on a breakaway to go ahead 5-1 at the 14:43 mark.
Mount Vernon controlled the tempo throughout much of the match, outshooting the Eagles 18-3.
Bella Champney had one save in goal in the first half while teammate Riley Blatt had two saves in the second period.
The Mustangs (2-0) are back on the pitch on Tuesday, Feb. 14 traveling to North Springs High School for a non-region match.
Kickoff against the Spartans is set for 5:30 p.m.
