ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys and Girls Tennis squads picked up hard fought victories on Monday afternoon, Feb. 13, each defeating Fulton Science Academy 3-2 at Wills Park Tennis Club.

In the Varsity Boys match, Liam O'Leary played a tough opponent at no. 1 singles and won 8-6.

Cadyn Dawson earned an easy 8-2 win at no. 2 singles as well.

Kiefer Hurtado and Nico Tur made quick work of their no. 1 doubles opponents, winning 8-2 to seal the match win for the Mustangs.

The Varsity Girls match went down to the wire.

Sofia Tur steamrolled her way to an 8-0 win at no. 1 singles.

At no. 2 doubles, Kate Duncan and Taylor Gravely emerged victorious, winning 8-5.

With Fulton Science taking the no. 2 and 3 singles points, the match came down to the no. 1 doubles contest.

Annabel France and Sadie Hutchens battled their opponent to a 4-4 start and finished the match on a 4-3 run to win 9-7.

"Pride is the overwhelming emotion I am feeling at the end of a long, but very satisfying, afternoon and early evening of tennis," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said.

"I'm proud of the effort put forth by the 22 athletes who went on the court today, proud of the sportsmanship displayed and proud of the support they showed each other," Staples added.

The Varsity Boys (5-1) and Varsity Girls (4-1) return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 14 hosting Mount Pisgah.

First serve against the Patriots is slated for 3 p.m. at Sandy Springs Tennis Center.
