ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys and Girls Soccer teams were in action on Tuesday, Feb. 14, taking on the North Springs High School Spartans in non-region play.

The Varsity Boys defeated the Spartans 2-0 at Ron Hill Field while the Varsity Girls cruised to an 11-1 win on the road.

In the Varsity Boys match, Mount Vernon struck less than five minutes in when George Walmsley assisted Alex Berry in the box to take a 1-0 lead.

Mount Vernon scored again with 1:50 remaining in the first period on a Walmsley goal that was preceded by a Spartan deflection in the box.

Perhaps the play of the match occurred in the second period.

After the Mustangs were called for a foul in the box, the Spartans had a penalty kick to cut their deficit in half.

But keeper Harrison Estenson fell on the attempt to stymie the Spartan opportunity.

The Mustangs controlled the tempo for much of the game, totaling 26 shots and nine corner kicks.

Estenson finished with five saves to earn the win in goal.

Mount Vernon's back line held the Spartans to just six shots as well.

In the Varsity Girls match, the Mustangs stomped the Spartans with eight goals in the first period.

After a 1-1 start to the match, the Mustangs rattled off seven consecutive goals to lead 8-1 at halftime.

Playing a 20 minute second period, Mount Vernon added three goals within the first 12 minutes to bring the mercy rule into effect.

Taylor Keller led the team with four goals while Karoline Lundstrom netted three scores with two assists.

Eden Wassersug finished with two goals and teammates Lilla Adams and Stella Olives had one.

Riley Blatt finished with two saves in the first half and Bella Champney tallied two of her own in the second period.

Both Mustangs teams are back on the pitch on Wednesday, Feb. 15, traveling to Fellowship Christian School.

First kick for the Varsity Girls (3-0) is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the Varsity Boys (2-2) to follow at 7 p.m. at Bob Lord Field.
