ATLANTA - For a second consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team has qualified for the State Tournament.

The Mustangs did so by defeating the Weber School Rams 57-44 on Tuesday night, Feb. 14 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium in the Region 6-1A Tournament Quarterfinals.

Mount Vernon now advances to the Tournament Semifinals in an attempt to capture the Region Tournament Championship.

In Tuesday's quarterfinal contest, the Mustangs opened the game against Weber on a 12-4 run after the first period.

The Rams battled back to win the second quarter 15-11, giving the Mustangs a slim 23-19 edge at halftime.

Both squads battled back-and-forth in the third quarter, with the Mustangs securing a 20-15 spurt to lead 43-34 going into the final frame.

Mount Vernon sealed the victory by taking the fourth quarter 14-10.

Dennis Scott III posted 20 points and 10 rebounds in the winning bid.

Teammate Xavier Shegog also posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

AJ Patterson facilitated the offense nicely for the Mustangs, racking up seven assists on the night.

Caleb Ouanounou led the Rams in scoring with 18 points, include four made 3-pointers.

Mount Vernon (18-8, 7-2 Reg. 6-1A), ranked no. 1 in Class-A DI, will now travel to play no. 6 ranked King's Ridge in the Region Tournament Semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The Tigers (18-8, 6-3 Reg. 6-1A) won the regular season meeting 73-63 back on Dec. 6 and advanced to the Tournament Semifinals by edging out Saint Francis 48-47 on Tuesday night.

Tip-off for Thursday's contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the King's Ridge Student Center Gymnasium.
