ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team is one win away from Region 6-A DI Tournament Championship.
The Mustangs secured their spot in the title game with a gutsy 53-48 victory over the no. 6 ranked King's Ridge Tigers on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15 at the Student Center in the semifinal round.
Mount Vernon jumped out to a 14-11 lead after the first quarter and won the second frame 14-11 to lead 28-22 at halftime.
After winning the third period 14-12, the Mustangs held off the Tigers' 14-11 run in the final quarter to take the win.
Keith Williams led the Mustangs in scoring with 12 points.
Dennis Scott III finished with 11 points, seven of which came in the final quarter.
Xavier Shegog rounded out the Mustangs who were in double figures with 10 points.
William Jobe paced the Tigers with 14 points, nine of which came from behind the 3-point line.
Mount Vernon will face the Mount Pisgah Patriots in the Region Tournament Championship Game on Saturday, Feb. 18 at King's Ridge.
Mount Pisgah (19-7) defeated Mt. Bethel 58-51 on Thursday afternoon to advance.
The Mustangs (19-8) won the regular season contest against the Patriots 56-37 on Jan. 10.
Tip-off for Saturday's game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
