ALPHARETTA, Ga. - For the first time in program history, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team is hoisting a GHSA Region Tournament Championship trophy.

The Mustangs accomplished that feat by defeating the Mount Pisgah Patriots 67-53 at the King's Ridge Student Center in the tournament title game on Saturday night, Feb. 18.

"It's been six years of hard work and labor," Head Coach Tarrik Mabon said. "We have come a long way and sacrificed so much. I'm so proud of all of them."

Mount Vernon trailed 16-11 at the end of the first quarter but got hot at the right time in the second period.

The Mustangs used a 20-10 run to take a 31-26 edge into halftime.

Twelve of those 20 points came via Pace Bottoms, who drilled four 3-pointers in the quarter to spark the Mustangs.

The Mustangs secured a 21-12 spurt in the third frame to go ahead 52-38.

This time, Dennis Scott III provided the fuel, pouring in 11 of his 16 points in the third quarter.

Mount Vernon won the final period 15-13 to secure the championship.

Three other Mustangs finished in double figures scoring: AJ Patterson 13, Kenneth Southall 11 and Xavier Shegog 10.

Shegog totaled 10 rebounds to score a double-double as well.

Mount Vernon fired on all cylinders from behind the arc, hitting twelve 3-pointers in the winning bid.

"Nobody in the world deserves it more than these guys," Mabon said. "Our fans have been great all year and we all celebrate with these great young men."

Mount Vernon (20-8) will be the no. 1 seed from Region 6-1A and will host the first round of the GHSA Class-A DI State Tournament, which begins on Tuesday night, Feb. 21.

The Mustangs will square off against the Jasper County High School Hurricanes, the no. 4 seed from Region 5, at 8 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
