Mustangs Race Past Stephenson Jaguars En Route to 13-2 Victory

DUNWOODY, Ga. - After dropping Saturday's road contest at FPD, the Mount Vernon Varsity Baseball team responded in a major way, thwarting the Stephenson High School Jaguars 13-2 in five innings at Brook Run Park on Monday, Feb. 20.

Mount Vernon trailed 2-1 after the first inning but outscored the Jaguars 12-0 the rest of the game to pick up the win in convincing fashion.

The Mustangs tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning when Bennett Bogdanchik singled to score Dawson Stevens.

Two batters later, Mount Vernon took the lead for good when Daniel O'Keefe singled to left field to plate Brooks Champney for a 3-2 contest.

Mount Vernon created more separation in the bottom of the third inning, scoring six runs on five hits to go ahead 9-2.

Holden Baker crossed the dish on a passed ball followed by an Avery Anderson single to left field to bring home Champney, Bogdanchik, and Stevens for a 7-2 advantage.

O'Keefe doubled one batter later to score Anderson followed by a Dylan Holbrook infield single to plate O'Keefe to go up seven runs.

Mount Vernon added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the last coming from an O'Keefe base hit that allowed Bogddanchik to come home for a 13-2 edge.

With the run rule in effect, the Mustangs retired the side in order in the top of the fifth to pick up the win.

Stevens picked up the win on the bump for the Mustangs, tossing three innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out three batters.

Nate Sumway pitched two innings in relief with three strikeouts and no hits allowed.

Mount Vernon (2-1) is back on the diamond on Thursday, March 9, taking on Heritage School in a scheduled doubleheader.

First pitch against the Hawks for Game One is scheduled for 4 p.m. with Game Two to follow at 6 p.m. in Newnan, Ga.
