ATLANTA - One win down.

Four to go.

That's all that stands in between the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team to capture the GHSA Class-A DI State Championship.

The Mustangs sweetened the opportunity to accomplish that feat by advancing to the Sweet 16 and defeating the Jasper County (aka Monticello) Hurricanes 96-56 on Tuesday night, Feb. 21 at the Upper Campus Gym.

Mount Vernon never relinquished the lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Hurricanes 23-7.

The Mustangs kept their pedal to the metal in the second quarter, finishing the half on a 33-15 spurt to lead 56-22.

Much was the same story in the second half as Mount Vernon won the the third period 23-18 giving them enough separation to seal the win.

Five players scored in double figures for the Mustangs: Xavier Shegog (26), Shayah Goba (15), Keith Williams (14), Sean Pierce (14), and Dennis Scott III (11).

Shegog led the Mustangs in rebounds with seven while teammate AJ Patterson racked up eight assists.

After not hitting a 3-pointer in the first period, the Mustangs capitlazed from downtown the rest of the contest, pouring in eight triple-dips.

Kenneth Southall finished with nine points, all via the 3-pointer.

Two of Pierce's 14 points came via the 3-pointer as well.

Mount Vernon also capitalized from the free throw line, hitting 12-of-16 shots overall.

The Mustangs (21-8) advance to the Sweet 16 round of the State Tournament where they will host the winner of the Tallulah Falls/Chatooga game, which will be played Wednesday night.

Mount Vernon's Sweet 16 game will take place either Friday, Feb. 24 or Saturday, Feb. 25.
