ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys basketball season came to a close on March 3 in the GHSA Class-A DI Final 4, but the team set new heights and a standard of excellence moving forward.

The Mustangs advanced to the Elite 8 and the Final 4 for the first time in program history.

The Mustangs eclipsed the 20-win mark (23 total) for the first time in their GHSA era and in nearly a decade.

Not only that, Mount Vernon won the Regular Season Region 6-1A Championship and the Region 6-1A Tournament Championship and reached a ranking as high as no. 1 multiple times in various media polls.

Five Mustangs garnered All-Region honors as well: A.J. Patterson, Dennis Scott III, Xavier Shegog, Kenneth Southall and Keith Williams.

"This season was historic because we kept the main thing, the main thing," Head Coach Tarrik Mabon said. "Our foundation was built on rock as described in the book of Matthew."

Mabon, who was named Region Coach of the Year by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association, says his seniors played pivotal role this season.

"Shout out to A.J., Keith, Kenny and Sean (Pierce), who sacrificed a lot for us to make it to the Final 4." Mabon said. "They helped keep our culture strong all season as we made a push to the State Finals."

Mabon also noted the positive impact the entire MV Community made during this dream season.

"None of this happens with out support from our administration, facilities team, athletic staff, beloved teachers, fellow coaches, and our passionate students," Mabon said. "Our gym was rocking every night!"

The Mustangs return three of their five starters from this years' squad and eight players overall from the 2022-23 roster.

This season will never be forgotten by many in Mustang Nation, but the team and coaches have their eye on the ultimate prize moving forward: a State Title.

"We did all of this for our community," Mabon said. "Hopefully we can do this even more next year."
