Tennis Sweeps Paideia, Girls Claim Regular Season Region Title

CLARKSTON, Ga. - March 23 will go down in history for the Mount Vernon Varsity Tennis program.

The Varsity Girls (12-1, 9-0) clinched the Region 6-1A DI regular season region championship by defeating the Paideia Pythons 4-1 at the GSU Clarkston Campus Tennis Complex.

The title marks the first in program history for the Varsity Girls squad.

The Varsity Boys (12-2, 8-1) won 4-1 as well to earn regular season Region Runner-Up honors for the 2023 season.

In the Varsity Girls match, the Mustangs maintained their undefeated status in the region.

Sofia Tur played a perfect match at no. 1 singles, blanking her challenger 6-0, 6-0.

Daniela O'Leary had a similar day, squashing her no. 2 singles opponent 6-1, 6-0.

Reagan Wissman ended up on the right side of a 10-point tiebreak in Thursday's match, conquering her no. 3 singles opponent 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.

Annabel France & Sadie Hutchens cruised their way to a 6-4, 6-0 win at no. 1 doubles as well.

In the boys match, Liam O'Leary bulldozed his no. 1 singles challenger 6-2, 6-0.

Cadyn Dawson had an impressive day as well, winning the no. 2 singles match 6-3, 6-4.

Kiefer Hurtado & Nico Tur cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 annihilation of their no. 1 doubles opponents.

Jac Crouch & Sam Hodges earned a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 victory at no. 2 doubles to round out the wins for the Mustangs.

The Varsity Girls are back on the court on Monday, March 27, taking on Atlanta International in the first round of the Region 6-1A DI Tournament at Dunwoody Country Club at 4 p.m.

"The Varsity girls have built upon their success from last season and are poised for success in the Region Tournament and a deep run in the State Playoffs," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "The sky is the limit for these girls ~ I can't wait to see what they accomplish!"

The Varsity Boys will host Mt. Pisgah in the Region Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 28 at Dunwoody Country Club at a time to be determined.

"The Varsity Boys have had a stellar year in our region and are looking forward to competing in the Region Tournament" Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "After a first round exit in last year's State Playoffs, the boys are determined to go further this year. With their talent & competitiveness, I believe they will do just that!"
