MABLETON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys tennis team had a historic day on Wednesday, March 29, claiming second at the Region 6-1A DI Tournament at Whitefield Academy for the first time in program history.
The Mustangs defeated Whitefield 3-2 in the semifinals before falling to Atlanta International 3-2 in the Championship match.
In the semifinal match against Whitefield, the Mustangs secured their three wins from Liam O'Leary at no. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2), Cadyn Dawson at no. 2 singles (5-7, 6-0, 6-1) and Kiefer Burtado & Nico Tur at no. 1 doubles (6-3, 7-6 (7-3)).
In the finals, the Mustangs got straight set wins from Dawson at no. 2 singles (6-4, 6-2) who avenged a regular season loss and Kiefer Hurtado & Nico Tur at no. 1 doubles (6-3, 6-4).
Christopher played a great match against a guy who made only a handful of errors across 2 sets (0-6, 3-6).
The Mustangs will return to action on Wednesday, April 5, traveling to Pace Academy for a regular season match against the Knights.
Mount Vernon closes out the regular season on Tuesday, April 11 at Decatur High School.
By finishing second in the Region Tournament, Mount Vernon will host the first round of the GHSA Class-A DI State Tournament, scheduled to be completed by April 20 against an opponent to be determined.
