Region Tournament Champions! Mustangs Claim Region 6-1A Title with Wins Over Mt. Pisgah, Weber

MABLETON, Ga. - For the first time in program history, the Mount Vernon Varsity Girls Tennis team is hoisting a Region Tournament Championship trophy.

The Mustangs defeated Mt. Pisgah 3-0 in the semifinals followed by a 3-1 victory over the Weber School in the finals to secure the programs first Region Championship on Wednesday afternoon, March 29, at Whitefield Academy.

In the semifinal match against Mt. Pisgah, the Mustangs secured three wins from Sofia Tur at no. 1 singles (6-1, 6-0), Daniela O'Leary at no. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2), and Kate Duncan & Taylor Gravely at no. 2 doubles (6-1, 6-2).

The Championship match proved no trouble for the Mustangs, defeating Weber 3-1.

Mount Vernon's wins came from Tur at no. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0), O'Leary at no. 2 singles (6-0, 6-0), and Annabel France & Sadie Hutchens clinching the championship with a 7-6 (9-7), 6-4 comeback win.

"It was a great day for our girls," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "Now we get to bring home some fancy hardware to display."

"I'm so proud of our girls for the gritty effort they put forth today and all season as well," Staples added.

The Mustangs will return to action on Wednesday, April 5, traveling to Pace Academy for a regular season match against the Knights.

Mount Vernon closes out the regular season on Tuesday, April 11 at Decatur High School.

By finishing first in the Region Tournament, Mount Vernon will host the first round of the GHSA Class-A DI State Tournament, scheduled to be completed by April 20 against an opponent to be determined.
