Girls and Boys Soccer Earn Region Sweep at Mount Pisgah

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Girls and Boys Soccer teams hit the pitch this past Saturday, April 1, taking on the Mount Pisgah Patriots in Region 6-1A action at the Patriot Athletic Complex.

The Varsity Girls opened the double header with an 8-4 win while the Varsity Boys followed with a 3-0 victory.

In the Varsity Girls match, the Mustangs spread the wealth on offense to go ahead 4-1 by halftime.

First half goals were scored by Taylor Keller, Karoline Lundstrom (2) and Eden Wassersug.

In the second half, the Mustangs scored twice within the first five minutes of play with two more goals from Keller.

The Patriots rattled off three consecutive goals to pull within two at 6-4 but the Mustangs closed the match on a 2-0 run with two more Keller scores.

Keller finished with five goals overall to lead the Mustangs.

Lundstrom totaled three assists while teammates Keller, Wassersug, Macy Leask, and Rachel Reeve each totaled one dime.

In the Varsity Boys match, the Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead by halftime with a goal coming from Moritz Martin.

Mount Vernon secured the win in the second half when George Walmsley and Martin each scored to go ahead 3-0.

Landron Hoyal totaled two assists in the match, aiding on Martin's first goal of the game and Walmsley's score in the second period.

The Varsity Girls (10-2) will now shift their attention to the Class-A DI State Tournament.

The Mustangs will be the no. 2 seed from Region 6 and will host Oglethorpe County, the no. 3 seed from Region 5, on Tuesday, April 11 at Ron Hill Field at 6 p.m.

The Varsity Boys (7-6) will know of their State Tournament fate later this week once all regular season region matches have been completed. Check www.mountvernonathletics.com for further developments.
