ATLANTA - For a second consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Girls Soccer team is moving to the Sweet 16.

The Mustangs accomplished that outcome by defeating the Oglethorpe County Patriots 10-0 on Tuesday evening, April 11, in the first round of the GHSA Class-A DI State Tournament at Ron Hill Field.

Mount Vernon scored early and often, pumping in six goals by halftime to take a commanding 6-0 lead.

Taylor Keller started the scoring just four minutes into the match on an assist from Karoline Lundstrom for a 1-0 lead.

Twenty seconds later, Eden Wassersug broke away and booted in a goal for a 2-0 advantage.

With 21:43 to play in the half, Lilla Adams sent a corner kick into the box that found the feet of Lundstrom, who knocked it past the Patriot keeper for a 3-0 Mustang edge.

Mount Vernon made it 4-0 when Wassersug struck again, this time on a double assist from Lundstrom and Stella Olives with 20 minutes to play in the first period.

Keller scored her second goal of the period at 13:04 while Lundstrom secured her second score of the half on a Ruby Turner assist with just under nine minutes to play in the first half.

In the second half, the Mustangs scored four times within the first 15 minutes of action to bring the mercy rule into effect.

Keller assisted Lundstrom at 37:01 and Lundstrom aided Rachel Reeve five minutes later to give Mount Vernon an 8-0 lead.

Wassersug picked up her second goal after Reeve's score and then assisted Keller for the tenth goal to end the match.

Keller, Lundstrom, and Wassersug all had tricks in the winning bid.

Mount Vernon outshot Oglethorpe 30-5 and totaled four corner kicks.

Bella Champney was the keeper for the Mustangs in the first half, securing five saves.

Riley Blatt was in goal for the duration of the second period as well.

Mount Vernon (11-2) will return to play on Monday, April 17, traveling to play Dade County in the Sweet 16.

Kickoff against the Wolverines is set for 5:30 p.m. in Trenton, Ga.
