ROME, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Tennis team added to the already historic year for MV Athletics.
The Mustangs defeated the no. 1 seeded Darlington School Tigers 3-2 on Monday afternoon, April 24 at the Darlington Tennis Courts to advance to the GHSA Class-A DI Elite 8 for the first time in program history.
Liam O'Leary struck first, dealing a 6-1, 6-2 deadly blow to his no. 1 singles opponent.
Cadyn Dawson followed with a 6-3, 6-2 win at no. 2 singles.
Perhaps the match of the day was at no. 1 doubles that saw Kiefer Hurtado and Nico Tur played a three hour battle with the match even at 2-2.
The duo took the first set 7-5 but dropped the second set, 6-7 (3-7).
After a brief 10-minute break, Hurtado and Tur prevailed 6-2 in the third set to send the Mustangs to the Elite 8.
The Mustangs (17-4) will return to play next week at Bacon County on a day to be determined by the coaches.
