DUNWOODY, Ga. - For a second consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Girls Tennis team is going to the Elite 8.
The Mustangs secured that spot by defeating Trion High School 3-1 in the Sweet 16 round on Tuesday afternoon, April 25 at Dunwoody Country Club.
Sofia Tur (no. 1 singles) and Daniela O'Leary (no. 2 singles) both shutout their opponents 6-0, 6-0.
Kate Duncan and Taylor Gravely brought home the victory at no. 2 doubles with a comeback win: 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
"Our fans were great," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "In the past 24 hours, we have been reminded just how important having a cheering section is in the playoffs. It is like having an eighth player in the lineup."
Added Staples: "I'm proud of our girls and boys for their performances this week and we look forward to competing in the Elite 8."
The Mustangs (16-3) will now host Bacon County in the Elite 8 at a date and time that will be determined in the coming days.
