Mustangs Punch Ticket to GHSA State Finals with 3-2 Victory at Commerce

COMMERCE, Ga. - For the first time in school history, a Mount Vernon state playoff bracketed team has advanced to the GHSA State Finals.

The Varsity Girls Soccer team accomplished that feat by defeating Commerce High School 3-2 on the road on Thursday night, April 27.

Commerce scored the first goal of the match 12 minutes in to take a 1-0 lead.

But Mount Vernon answered with an Eden Wassersug goal with 17:00 remaining in the first half to even the match at 1-1.

In the second half, Commerce took the lead again, scoring nine minutes into the half for a 2-1 lead.

But the Mustangs closed the period on a 2-0 run with goals from Tayler Keller and Rachel Reeve to secure the victory.

The Mustangs (14-2) will play the winner of Social Circle/Paideia on Tuesday, May 2 at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. at 5 p.m.
